The Framing Lot was started in June 2006 by husband and wife team Alec and Jo Palmer. Alec qualified as a framer while working in his family framing business in London in 1993 and joined a local Exeter firm in 1998, having moved to Devon with his wife Jo and their young family. In 2006 we took the decision to set up our own framing business and in June of that year we opened the doors of our workshop in Dawlish.
Alec and Jo work on all aspects of the framing processes - we believe this enables us to offer the best advice to our customers. We do have our specialisations though and so if you prefer to talk hand finished frames with Alec or textile framing and art with Jo, then we are happy to get each other involved in the design process to assist you. In addition to the years of training and experience we already have in the industry, in 2014 we took the decision to take the Guild Commended Framer qualification authorised by the Fine Art Trade Guild, the trade body for the art and framing industry. Both Jo and Alec passed the GCF exam in April 2014. They are committed to ongoing training and keeping up to date with industry developments as part of their membership of the Guild. Jo is also proud to be currently serving as a Director of the Fine Art Trade Guild as a member of the Court of the Guild.
It was a conscious decision to base the business away from a traditional High Street location. We have the room to be able to work with larger pieces of artwork as well as handling volume framing artist exhibitions, even when these jobs coincide. We have space to ensure that all the work is safely stored and protected.
And our location has the added advantage of free parking right outside the door!
All our frames are made in our workshop - even our ready-made frames - and you can see us at work as you browse through our extended selection of gifts, prints, cards, glass art and mirrors in our gallery.
We believe every customer has the right to friendly expert advice and help from us to ensure that the framing they choose to have is exactly right for them and their picture. No matter what your budget may be, or what it is you are choosing to have framed - we will always give our best service and ensure a superb quality of finish. We try to make the design process as relaxed as possible and although we are there to advise and suggest options, we also encourage you to get involved so that the finished piece truly reflects your choices and vision of how you want the work to be displayed.
We are pleased to work with members of local art societies including Teignmouth Art Society, Dawlish Art Society, Dawlish Painters and Bishopsteignton Art Society; plus participants in Devon Open Studios and other local art projects. Jo has been to a number of local art societies to give talks on framing with particular relevance to those wishing to sell on their work, and we have received very positive feedback on how useful these can be.
As the business has got older since 2006, so have our children - you may have seen them becoming involved in background jobs in the workshop, particularly on Saturday mornings. They were learning the basics of framing, just as Alec did in his own family's business in London all those years ago. We have now been joined by our elder son Matthew as a full time member of staff, he will not be with us permanently as he is heading for a career in the military, but he will be with us while he goes through the application process and up until he starts his training. We are really pleased to have him on board and know he will be a great asset to our business.
